Abstract

Ecolinguistics has emerged as an interdisciplinary field that examines the relationship between language, ecology, and environmental sustainability. As ecological crises intensify globally, researchers increasingly recognize the role of language in shaping environmental attitudes, ideologies, and behaviors. This review paper examines the major methodologies employed in ecolinguistics research and explores their theoretical foundations, applications, strengths, and limitations. The study synthesizes methodologies such as Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), Cognitive Linguistics, Corpus Linguistics, and Narrative and Ethnographic approaches. It further highlights emerging methodological trends including multimodal analysis, participatory research, and eco-pedagogical studies. The review identifies significant methodological gaps, particularly the lack of classroom-based longitudinal studies, limited use of mixed methods, and insufficient engagement with policy and social media discourse. The paper argues that methodological pluralism is essential for advancing ecolinguistic inquiry and promoting sustainability-oriented language research. By critically reviewing existing approaches, this study contributes to the development of more inclusive, interdisciplinary, and transformative methodologies in ecolinguistics research.
