Abstract

Food packaging plays a critical role in maintaining quality, safety, and shelf life of food products. However, conventional petroleum-based plastics contribute significantly to environmental pollution and microplastic contamination. The present research proposes the development and characterization of edible films derived from underutilized crops including cowpea and red rice. The study focuses on the extraction of starch from these crops, preparation of starch nanoparticles from the same source, and fabrication of native and nano-reinforced edible films through solvent casting. Mechanical, barrier, thermal, structural, optical, biodegradation, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties will be evaluated. The work aims to address critical research gaps related to self-reinforced starch nanoparticle systems and direct comparison between native and nano-starch films. The outcomes are expected to provide sustainable packaging alternatives while promoting utilization of indigenous crops and supporting circular bioeconomy principles.
